PCDcast open call

In the name of kinship, we invite you to pick up your microphones, jabber about interesting topics in software and code, and share this with the community!

What are you talking about?
This is an open call for everyone – from all walks of life – to produce a short podcast episode about software as a warm-up for this year’s PCD. Invite one or a couple of people to have a chat about software and code and capture this conversation into a podcast episode...

... Go traditional or go wild — The topic is totally up to you. We’ve provided a few tips below for the format of the podcast, please read them before production.

After submitting your podcast episode to margretexie@gmail.com, we’ll share it on this website for everyone to listen in to.

We look forward to listening to your voices, and if not, we’ll see you at the PCD event!    ~PCD Organizing Committee, 2021

Quick step guide

If you need help with any of these steps, send us an email.

  1. Record an interview, physically or online. (See tips below)
  2. Generate intro music for your podcast, by using the jingle generator (optional - see tips below)
  3. Clip and mix your recording (10-30 minutes). (See tips below)
  4. Write a max. 50 word description of interviewee and topic as well as a title for the episode and the name of the author (your name).
  5. Choose an image for your podcast (ratio: 1:1, min. size: 500x500 px)
  6. Send the audiofile, text and image to margretexie@gmail.com

Tips for recording

  • Device: Any recording equipment is sufficient, even phones.
  • Quality: For best sound quality in recording, locate yourself in a room with good sound absorbance (E.g. surround your recording environment with soft items like cushions, carpets or blankets, and opt for a small and quiet room)
  • Online interviews: If interviewing through an online connection, you can use the following method for best sound quality:
    1. Record audio of each person seperately from the online connection. (For instance plug headphones into the computer with the meeting so you can hear the respons from the other person, but record your own voice through e.g. your phone. The other person does the same thing.)
    2. Collect the two files and mix together the audiotracks during editing.

Tips for mixing/editing

  • Length: We suggest the length of an episodes to be around 10-30 minutes.
  • Software: Since openness is at the heart of the processing community, we strongly recommend opting for open source tools for editing (like Audacity or Ardour).
  • Music: If you feel like it, we’ve coded an instrument for generating music for your podcast episode. Go here to use the generator and download the file credits: Mace Ojala
    • Use the music for intro, and possibly transitions and outros - whatever suits your case.
  • Fileformat: Any fileformat can be used, just make it as uncompressed as possible (for exact quality measures, export file at 16 bit and 48 kHz)
  • Help: You are welcome to write us an email if you have trouble with the editing (margretexie@gmail.com)
